Featured C3 Event!
September Adopt-a-Beach™ part of the International Coastal Cleanup

photo courtesy of Alliance for the Great Lakes
Join Alliance for the Great Lakes and C3 for exciting beach and shoreline cleanups involving thousands of volunteers to remove trash and collect data on their findings.
The event takes place this Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, 9 a.m. to noon (dates may vary based on location) at beaches and tributaries along Great Lakes coastal areas in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Many of these beaches are located right here in Chicago.
Cleanup volunteers are individuals, families, schools, community, scouting and religious groups. The information gathered is used to make positive changes for our Great Lakes.
Register online at www.greatlakesadopt.org to take part in the cleanup. Sign up for a designated location of your choice and come for a few hours of fun and community involvement. C3 Staff will be at Foster Avenue Beach, so be sure to come visit and volunteer with us. You can also play a lead role in the cleanup by coordinating a cleanup in your area.
For more information, contact Frances Canonizado: fcanonizado@greatlakes.org

Have fun giving back to the places you care about. The Great Lakes shoreline and beaches are right in our backyards.

The weather may be cooling off, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for one last hurrah at the beach. September has some exciting beach clean up events in store. C3 Leader Jake Williams will host a final adopt-a-beach workday at Thorndale Avenue Beach from 12pm-2pm this Sunday, September 11th. You will beautify the beach, learn about beach and water issues, and even do some water quality testing. Feel free to stick around afterward to take a dip and enjoy this great northside beach. The last few times at this beach, Jake and his team of volunteers have collected pounds and pounds of waste and have noticed a cleanier, healthier beach each time back.
Further details: Meet at the end of the drive just north of the playground. They will start with a brief introduction to the general water conservation issues pertaining to Chicago and the Great Lakes region, as well as instructions for completing specific tasks. All necessary materials will be provided for you. Light snacks and water will be available, but please bring your own reusable water bottle. Remember to wear sunscreen and be prepared to get your feet wet.
Please RSVP by contacting Jake Williams at thorndaleave.beach@gmail.com. In the event of bad weather, a cancellation notice will be sent out via email on the morning of the event possibly including a rescheduled date.
We hope to see you there!
