C3 Project Calendar
The following projects are currently being developed by our Spring 2009 C3 Trainees. If you would like to participate in any of these projects, please email us at conservation@cityofchicago.org and reference the specific project.
Adopt-A-Beach
David Brinn, Interfaith Beach Cleanup
4th Ward, Hyde Park and Jackson Park
David will facilitate a two part program involving two faith communities/congregations in Hyde Park: 1. An interfaith (Jewish/Christian) educational program on the shared theological commitment to the environment, and 2. A beach cleanup program in Jackson Park, involving both congregations.
Become a Site Steward
Jennifer Evans, Excuse me, I think you dropped something
35th Ward, Humboldt Park
Jen and her team will educate citizens to use trash cans instead of the ground by developing a comprehensive advertising campaign to fight littering in and around Humboldt Park. They will organize a park cleanup in Humboldt Park, which is a park in need of greater stewardship. They will use measurable findings of trash cleanup and education to perform a grassroots event after cleanup to drive the message home to the community.
Green Your Office
Lisa Provorny, Green Your Grocer
46th Ward, Andersonville/Uptown
The goal of Lisa’s project is to assess the waste output of an individual Jewel/Osco location in the city. She will use that audited information to prioritize and implement sustainable business practices. These new standards will hopefully become the industry standard for all Jewel/Osco stores as well as other brand name supermarkets owned by the parent company.
Living Green
Chelsea Richer, Connecting the Disconnected
26th Ward, Citywide
Chelsea’s project aims to engage and foster a community among a population that feels disconnected – new graduates who are looking for a positive way to connect to the city. This effort will take the form of three short informational workshops where C3 principles are distilled to the information that’s most useful to this population (saving money, non-permanent), followed by social events that maximize public open space (parks, beach fronts, Millennium Park). This project, by nature, is not defined by geographical community borders but rather by demographic, sociological borders that are, to a large extent, self-selected.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink!
Julie Hall, Recycling, It’s as Easy as 1-2-3
37th Ward, Garfield Park
As a participant in the City’s Blue Cart program, the 37th Ward struggles to maintain a healthy recycling rate. Julie will work with fellow Blue Cart Block Captains to provide workshops demonstrating the ease and value of recycling in the community, with the hope of making a sizable improvement to recycling participation in the ward.
Roll Out the Barrel
James Zaraza, Roll Out the Barrel
39th, Albany Park
Rain barrels will be distributed at Eugene Field Park at a time and date yet to be decided. An installation overview, as well as personalized assistance will be made available to assure proper installation. The event will be coordinated with the Eugene Field Park Advisory Council to further existing initiatives at the park.
