INTERNSHIP PROGRAM BACKGROUND
With a focus on policy analysis, public involvement and non-partisan advocacy, an Alliance for the Great Lakes internship will help qualify emerging professionals for key environmental careers. Although Alliance internships are offered without pay, school credit can be arranged and we will work with applicants to recruit external fellowship support. The rewards are enormous for those who have a desire to protect one of the world’s greatest natural treasures.

INTERNSHIP DUTIES
Because the Alliance’s internship program is selective (a limited number of interns are chosen each year) interns will receive intensive hands-on experience by working directly with highly-qualified Alliance staff.
Interns will work directly on projects to restore fish and wildlife habitat, eliminate toxic pollutants, and conserve land and water resources. The Alliance will work with individual students to customize their internship based on their skills, interests, and experience. Some examples of possible duties may include:
• Public outreach and education via presentations to volunteers, schools, local governments, community organizations, etc.;
• Assisting with the research, formation and implementation of environmental policy;
• Media outreach (e.g. drafting press releases, expanding media contacts, pitching stories to the media, organizing press conferences) in partnership with Alliance staff; and
• Administrative/ office tasks as needed.

ELIGIBILITY & QUALIFICATIONS
Many Alliance interns have gone on to become successful environmental professionals. Interns will require a variety of skill sets, but general qualifications must include:
• The ability to work with others in a small, friendly office setting.
• Good research, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Motivation to get results and learn quickly while not being hesitant to ask questions and seek guidance where needed.
• A willingness to “multi-task,” enhancing other areas of the Alliance’s efforts (such as membership) while performing direct internship responsibilities.
• Availability from May/June through August or later.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Flexible hours are available. Individuals interested in applying for an internship should send a resume, writing sample, and cover letter by February 15th, 2008 describing why they would like to work for the Alliance for the Great Lakes.
